Susan Baker Obituary

Susan “Sue” J. Baker was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, volunteer, and friend.  She left this world peacefully on November 28, 2021 at the age of 64.

Sue was born to Florence and Neil Parks in St. Johnsbury, Vermont on May 31, 1957.  After graduating from Danville High School, she joined the United States Air Force where she met her husband Delton Baker.  Together they raised Douglas, Jennifer and Nicole.  Sue and Delton have lived in Alamogordo since 1979.

Sue was passionate in her career and volunteer work.  She worked as an electronics technician for Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory, Central Inertial and Global Positioning System Test Facility Test Squadron, and the Holloman High Speed Test Track. She won several awards in her career.  In 2006, she earned her most honorable award from the Air Force Material Command Directorate of Engineering and Technical Management by “contributing immeasurably to keeping the Air Force Second to none”.   She found another passion giving back to the community in her volunteer work at the Alamogordo’s Cancer Resource Center where she led a team of volunteers who support people living with and affected by cancer.  In 2013, Alamogordo Daily News honored her with a Community Women of Merit Award for her commitment to the continuous enhancement of the Cancer Resource Center.

Sue was a detailed planner and always liked details.  She would write elaborate databases for work, home and play.  You left every story knowing how the entire conversation was connected and why every piece of that conversation was important.

She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan which came with many superstitions.  She had two cub dolls named “Stubby the Cubby”, a troll doll, and “Elroy the Batboy”, a bobble head.  The dolls HAD to watch the game on the TV, even if no one was home.  If she was ironing and watching the game, she divided her clothes into 9 innings and raced to finish her innings before the Cubs finished theirs. In 2012, she helped feed a group of five Chicago Cubs fans calling themselves Crack the Curse who set out on foot with a goat from Hohokam Stadium to Wrigley Field.  The cubs later won the 2016 World Series. Maybe, she helped break the curse.

She was extremely competitive and loved sports.  She was a hell of an arm wrestler and she retired with the Family Championship Belt. She enjoyed all card and strategy games and joined a local pinnacle club.

She loved her Grandchildren and would host “Grandma Bootcamps” in the summers for them.  Every grandchild decreased their flash card times.  They learned how to eat cheerios and were weaned from ketchup sandwiches.  She taught them the magic of angles through billiards.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Delton Baker; her siblings, Kathleen Hutchins, Stephen Parks, James Parks, Zoe Ann Parks, Daniel Parks, Janice Gilbert, and Carolyn Claxton; and her children, Douglas Baker, Jennifer Spencer and Nicole Tekell.
