Michael “Mike” Ray Walker, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, tio, cousin, and friend, was born on June 23, 1953, in Lubbock, Texas, to Lawrence Luther Walker and Eureka Lucille Walker. After fighting a valiant and courageous battle with esophageal cancer, Mike was lovingly healed in the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 20, 2026.

Mike is survived by his devoted wife and best friend, Sylvia Telles Walker. Married for 51 beautiful years, Mike often said that marrying Sylvia was the best decision he ever made. Their love was steadfast, joyful, and the foundation of the family they built together.

He is survived by his children, each of whom he loved fiercely: Julie and husband Brian Grinder of Alamogordo, NM; Laura and husband Diego Ortega of Las Cruces, NM; Michael Walker Jr. and husband Garrett Hall of Honolulu, HI.

Mike was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren who were the light of his life: Promise and husband Nic Bood, Baylyn Grinder, Ethan Grinder, Emily Grinder, D’Angelo Ortega, and Sebastian Ortega. He is also survived by his sister, Syldina Walker Butler, along with numerous godchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends who cherished him.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Luther and Ola Mae Walker, and Oscar and Eureka Smith; parents, Lawrence and Dorothy Walker, and Eureka Lucille and Victor Gibson; his sister, Marie Walker Trusty; his brothers, Lonnie and wife Christine Walker, and Richard Walker.

Mike was a proud graduate of New Mexico State University, earning his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering technology. He worked tirelessly to put himself through college, spending years on offshore oil rigs before becoming a field engineer in the Texas oil patch. In 1986, Mike and Sylvia moved “home” to Alamogordo to be closer to family, a decision that enriched the lives of everyone around them.

A man of deep patriotism, Mike dedicated over three decades as a contractor for the Department of Defense. His work ethic was unmatched, and his loyalty to his country unwavering.

If you knew Mike, you knew his servant’s heart. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, volunteer his time, or share his wisdom. His dry “dad humor” and endless supply of jokes brought laughter to countless memories. His warm smile, humble spirit, and gentle patience made him someone people naturally gravitated toward.

Mike was a “Super Fan,” cheering on all of his children and his grandchildren throughout their school years. Nothing brought him more joy than sitting in the stands, supporting the kids he loved so dearly. His presence, steady, encouraging, and full of pride, will be deeply missed.

His strength, courage, and unwavering faith in Jesus Christ guided him throughout his life and especially through his battle with cancer. His love for the Lord was evident in the way he lived, served, and loved others.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Christus Cancer Center, Christus Southern New Mexico, and Alamogordo Home Health Care and Hospice for their compassionate care, encouragement, and support throughout Mike’s journey.

The family has entrusted Mike’s care to Alamogordo Funeral Home, with deep appreciation for their kindness and professionalism. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or your local Cancer Resource Center, causes close to Mike’s heart.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, August 7, 2026, at St. Jude Catholic Church, with a rosary at 10:15 am, Mass at 11:00 am, and a reception to follow in the parish hall.

Mike Walker leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, strength, and service. His impact on his family, his community, and all who knew him will continue to shine brightly for generations.
