Mark Toohey Obituary

Mark Patrick Toohey, age 68, passed away Friday June 12th, in his home. Mark was born in Canton Ohio, where he lived until he graduated high school. Mark loved to explore and travel, to go on adventures and to discover new places. One of his favorite places where he lived was Philip, South Dakota. Here, Mark was a Health Service Administrator where he, his wife and son had lived for a few years. After South Dakota, Mark and his family moved to Kanab Utah.

Mark enjoyed living his favorite hobbies; hiking, camping, hunting, and tubing the rivers in Utah. In Utah, Mark was also a Hospital Administrator. In a few years’ time, Mark, and his family now including a daughter, moved from Utah to Alamogordo, New Mexico, where Mark lived the rest of his life. At this time, he was going through a divorce and he struggled as a single father, bringing up two children and working numerous jobs to support his family. Finally, luck came through when his experience in health services helped him get a job with the Income Support Division where he became a case worker, and later before he retired, was a Medical Assistance Trainer. As a trainer, he was able to travel all over New Mexico and do training conferences on Medicaid and Medicare programs. He loved trying new restaurants and revisiting his favorite ones. Much like Anthony Bourdain, he enjoyed fine dining and loved to see new places. This part of his career was his favorite.  Mark retired in 2013 and remained in Alamogordo. During his retirement, he kept up with and wrote about politics. He got to watch his children grow up, as well as his two grandchildren. Besides writing, Mark also loved photography, and to play music on his guitar.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard Toohey, Doris Toohey, and infant brother Michael. He is survived by his son Derek Toohey and wife Tanya, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, his daughter, Shaina Toohey of Alamogordo, New Mexico and two granddaughters, Rene Rosa Toohey-Mazurkiewicz, and Kylie Skye Courtney; brothers, Dennis Toohey of Canton, Ohio and Steven Toohey of Canton, Ohio; sister, Joanne Toohey of Canton, Ohio.
