Louis DeLeon Obituary

Louis Frank DeLeon passed away on November 26, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, son, brother, and uncle; devoted to his family and a true friend to many.

Louis was born October 28, 1940, in Crowley, Colorado to Evangelista Duran DeLeon and Pablo DeLeon and the 2nd oldest of four siblings: Ramona Garcia (Alfred), Abraham DeLeon (Margie), and Mercedes Melendrez (Joe). In 1959 he married the love of his life, Petronela (Pat) Vigil and they made their home in Alamogordo. They were married for 62 years until her passing in July 2022. He is survived by his six children: Teri DeLeon (Randy), Ronnie DeLeon-Dowd (Michael), Frankie DeLeon (Kim), Richard DeLeon, Patrick DeLeon (Janice), and Graciella DeLeon; as well as his 18 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.

Louis enjoyed being around his family; whether he was camping, hunting, playing cards, dancing, playing hide n seek, starting water or sock fights, or playing the organ and singing at home. He was a lifelong musician, playing the trumpet in the high school band, then playing the trumpet and organ in a band (one of the bands being the Rhythm Kings). He also sang and put together one CD where all instruments and vocals were his own. He loved talking about his childhood friends and other friendships he developed over the years. He loved visiting people and spent a lot of time at Walmart where he always saw someone he knew or would just strike up a conversation with a stranger. He loved having family and friends at the house. Louis worked at Holloman AFB and other jobs in Alamogordo, but the job he loved the most was his job as the Director of the Boys and Girls Club for almost 20 years. Known as Mr. D, he was an advocate for the youth. He started when the club was just the Boys Club, then the Boys & Girls Club. Mr. D did what he could to make the club a safe haven for the kids to go to. Mr. D had many hats as the Director of the Boys and Girls Club. He was the stern one, the advocate, and father figure to many of the members. Some say he was the father figure they never had. One said that Mr. D gave them reason to believe in himself. He gave himself unselfishly. He has made a difference in many lives that went to the Boys and Girls Club. He was coach, referee and had one of the best basketball programs in town along with the best coaches in town. He made sure the community was involved when it came to the Boys & Girls Club. He would make sure the community would donate to the club and would have businesses sponsor all the teams on the basketball program. He made proposals to get grants for the Boys and Girls Club with one grant leading to the Boys and Girls Club being built in its current location.

Louis is preceded in death by his wife, Pat Vigil DeLeon; his mother, Evangelista Duran DeLeon; his father, Pablo DeLeon; his sister, Ramona DeLeon Garcia; and his great granddaughter, Kayleigh DeLeon.
