Katherine "Kathy" Reyes Obituary

In Loving Memory of Katherine "Kathy" Louise Fields Reyes. A Free Spirit, Loving Mother, and Cherished Friend.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Kathy/Auntie (Fields) Reyes, a beautiful, free-spirited, and loving soul, whose warmth touched countless lives.

Kathy was a devoted and adoring mother to her only son, David Reyes, whom she cherished deeply and always held in the highest regard in her heart and life.

Kathy was unapologetically herself, a true free spirit and hippie at heart. Her love of music was unmatched, it was always music before television, and she especially loved the joy of live concerts. She could often be found smiling, flashing her signature peace sign, and radiating light wherever she went. She loved butterflies and anything purple, symbols of beauty and freedom that perfectly reflected her spirit.

Born, raised, and a lifelong resident of Tularosa, New Mexico, Kathy was deeply proud of her hometown. She lived in the family house that served as the heart and anchor for generations, a home always open to family and friends. Her home was a gathering place filled with laughter, good food, music, and stories of her childhood, her sisters, cousins, and her beloved family.

A graduate of New Mexico State University-Alamogordo, Kathy earned her Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education with gold cord honors. She dedicated many years to the Tularosa H.E.L.P. Headstart Program, where she was affectionately known as “Teacher Kathy". Her compassion, humor, and patience touched the lives of countless children and families in her community.

Kathy loved her friends and family fiercely and unconditionally. She was always willing to help anyone in need and had the rare gift of having never met a stranger. Her kindness, laughter, and boundless energy made her unforgettable. She was proud of her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, her “grandbabies”, celebrating each of their accomplishments with joy and love.

Sundays were often spent with her beloved son David, sharing hamburgers in Ruidoso and enjoying simple, happy moments together.

Kathy’s light, laughter, and love will be remembered always. We take comfort knowing she is in heaven, surrounded by loved ones who went before her. May her spirit continue to dance among the butterflies, carried by the rhythm of the music she so dearly loved as she smiles down on us.

Kathy is preceded in death by her parents, Manuel and Candelaria Fields of Tularosa; her sisters, Margaret (Fields) Smith and Teresita (Fields) Saenz; Jose "Joe" Reyes, loving father of David; and her great-nephew (and grandchild) William Christopher Schaefer; who we are certain were waiting to welcome her home with open arms.

She is survived by her beloved son, David Reyes of Alamogordo; her sister, Mary Ann Myers (Ralph) of Las Cruces; her niece/daughter, Candy Schaefer (Jim Collier) of Indiana;  great-nephews/grandsons, Denver Schaefer (Holly) and their children, Aspen, Kaid, and Aria of Indiana, and Devin Zachery Schaefer of Indiana; nieces, Depree (Debbie) Walkinshadow of Tularosa/Mescalero, Reini Marsh (Sean Haylek) of Florida, Gina Marie Marsh of Arizona: nephew, Jason Saenz of Albuquerque; great-nieces, Christina Gordon (Josh) of Virginia Beach Air Station, Bianca Rechsteiner (Shaun) and their son Chase of Florida, great-nephew, Eric Duffield (Alisha) of Florida; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and numerous cousins, ALL of whom she adored.

She is also survived by her dearest friends who were like family, Nettie Cordova (Manny) and Chris Montoya (who lovingly serves as guardian for her son David), along with many more lifelong friends too numerous to name.

The family is devastated by this sudden loss and deeply appreciates your love, support, and prayers for Kathy’s peaceful journey to be with our Heavenly Father.
