Our beloved father, Joseph David Springer, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 82 following a long struggle with cancer. Joe was proud, resilient, and compassionate. As an accomplished orthodontist and medical doctor, Joe took the greatest pride in serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and applying his academic achievements to improve what he referred to as the "human condition."
Joe was born on March 15, 1941, in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Joe graduated from college at the University of Texas in El Paso 1963. In 1969, Joe earned his Doctorate in Dentistry with a specialization in Orthodontics and applied his skills as a Captain in the U.S. Army between 1969 and 1972. He would later go on to earn a Doctorate in Medicine from the Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez.
Joe was a generous man, and he is survived by many whose lives he transformed for the better. He was widely known as a gentleman, for he always strove to be respectful, chivalrous, well-mannered, and gracious in his daily interactions with everyone, regardless of their background. Joe had remarkable grit and he never hesitated to rise to the challenge. He also had a memory like an elephant, and he never forgot a kind gesture. He remembered how people treated him and his loved ones, and he protected his family fiercely.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Mary Springer; his son, Aaron Springer; his brothers, Bert I. Springer, George J. Springer, William C. Springer, and James R. Springer; and his sister, Connie Springer Sherman.
Joe is survived by his four remaining children, Haider (Christian) David Andazola, Eve Marie Springer, Tara Springer Ubelhor, and Kirsten Springer, along with many grandchildren. He is also survived by his three sisters, Mary S. Carrillo, Catherine S. Fales, and Michol S. Ashe.
Our family is profoundly grateful for the extraordinary compassion that Joe's caregiver, Claudia Gonzales, provided to him during the final months of his life. Her commitment and grace in caring for him were a shining example of the best of humanity.
