Joseph “Joe” William Smith was born on January 25, 1948 in Cincinnati, Ohio and passed away November 6, 2021 in Las Cruces, New Mexico after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Joe proudly served in the Navy as an aviation mechanic for a combat helicopter unit in Vietnam and after being honorably discharged, he became an automotive mechanic.
He was well known in Alamogordo working at One Stop Auto, Big A, Napa, the Sawmill, and running his own business, M&J Tools, with his wife Mamie. Joe was an avid outdoors man, playing men’s softball, loved fishing, vintage cars, motorcycles, and shooting. He loved watching the Cincinnati Reds and his passion for shooting was brought on by his love for westerns, especially the Lone Ranger. He was a member of SASS-Cowboy Action Shooting and various motorcycle and car clubs. During the early 80’s, he was a Two-Time Dirt Track Street Stock Champion in Merced, California.
Joe is survived by his wife of 34 years, Mamie Smith; his children, Jennifer Simpson, Shelley Smith (John Ostendorf), Roland “Joey” Smith, Steven Smith (Sandy), Carrie Wagner (Tab Tidwell) and Patrick Tays (Tammy); his grandchildren, Lane Dale (Kyndrah), Lana Dale, Lance Dale, Christopher Stringer, Craig Stringer, Roland “Joey” Smith II, Tanner Smith, Taylor Cheshire-Denham, Mamie Lauren Lust, Miranda and Leichen Wagner, Samuel Tays; as well as numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, many friends he considered family, and his loyal fur baby, Trixie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carpenter and Amy Smith; 3 sisters, Winnie, Phyllis and Jean; 2 brothers, Kenny and Jerry; his mother-in-law, Sarah Simpson; father-in-law, Bill Simpson; and a grandson, Patrick William Tays.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Joe’s Grandsons.
Cremation has taken place and services will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, November 29, 2021 at the Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel, 2301 First Street in Alamogordo.
A graveside service will be held at 12:00 pm at the Monte Vista Cemetery, with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
The Smith family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the services.
