Joseph Leonard Lewandowski passed away with his family present, in his home in Alamogordo, NM. He was born February 23, 1933 in Philadelphia, PA to Raymond and Czeslawa Lewandowski. Joe had one brother, Leonard and one sister, Theresa, both deceased.
Joe started his adventures in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1951. He then enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1952 after the Army sent him to Maryland for field exercises where he had to sleep in a tent out in the woods. He said, enough of that and joined the Air Force. For all who truly knew our Father, you knew his love of the links, golfing every opportunity he could find. When he was a young man, many people tried to get him to go Pro, but true to his nature, his family came first. And, we all thank him for being there, at every concert, sporting/school event, birthday, and holiday. Always there, never expecting anything more, other than for us to be good people.
In 1956, Joe married Shirley Lee Cabbage, the mother of his four children, when they both were assigned to Waco, TX in the U.S. Air Force. He worked for a construction contractor in Page, AZ during the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam. The family moved to Alamogordo in 1963 where he started working Civil Service at White Sands Missile Range and then Holloman AFB. Later, Joe married Susan Hoover of Alamogordo. He retired from Civil Service in 1986 allowing more time for golf and family.
He is survived by his children; Joseph Lewandowski (Debra) of Alamogordo, Melanie Martinez (Ernie) of Alamogordo, Mark Lewandowski of Coeur d' Alene, ID and Theresa Lewandowski (Linda) of Rosamond, CA. He had ten grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
The Family asks if any person wishing to honor our Father, please donate to the Otero County Golf Federation through the Desert Lakes Golf Course.
The Lewandowski family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home.
