John Mattison Obituary

John Henry Mattison of Alamogordo, New Mexico was called to eternal rest on August 26, 2025. He was 87 years old. Born in Belton, South Carolina, he was the second of four children raised by James Wilmer (J.W.) and Gladys Rucker Mattison. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Belton, SC. He graduated from Greer High School in 1955 and went on to study dentistry at South Carolina State before answering the call to serve in the United States Air Force proudly. His distinguished military career spanned decades and continents, culminating in his retirement on March 1, 1976.

After retiring from the military, John settled in Alamogordo, New Mexico. He channeled his passion into entrepreneurship, founding Car Reficere Service, which grew into a full-service automobile shop known for its integrity and craftsmanship. John served as a bluecoat member of the Roadrunner Moose Legion 211-Alamogordo, NM for over 25 years.

John’s personal life was rich with love and family. He married Margaret Reed in 1964 and together they welcomed a son, Reginald Mattison. They later parted ways and in 1975, John and Marie France LePont were married. He lovingly raised her daughter, Isabelle, as his own and often spoke of Marie France. He always spoke about building a house on the property in SC and watch the trees grow.

John is preceded in death by his parents, James Wilmer Mattison and Gladys Rucker Mattison; his beloved wife, Marie France; and his brother, Herbert Wendell Mattison.

He is survived by his son, Reginald (Melissa) Mattison; grandchildren, Brandon (Emily), Konner, Kristen, and Brock; 4 great grandchildren; daughter, Isabelle; his brother, Harold Mattison of Alamogordo, NM, and his children, LaTrina Prince and Brian Mattison; his sister, Francenia (Earl) of Washington, DC, and her children, Melissa and Allison Thompson; Herbert’s children, Cassandra Johnson and Cyndi Mattison; cherished aunt, Roberta of Spartanburg, SC; and a host of extended family and friends.

John will be remembered as a kind-hearted man who had a strong love for his family. He was a friend to many who truly cherished relationships left behind. He will be missed by all who knew him for his exuberance, inspirational spirit, and deep love for those around him. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the stories he shared.
