Janice Talbert Obituary

Janice (Shanks) Talbert was born in the small town of Crocket, Texas on 21 November 1948. Her older sister, Joan and Janice, were the only two daughters of Frank and Jean Shanks. Janice spent her early life in Lufkin, Texas, graduating from Lufkin High School in the summer of 1967. After graduation, Janice went to college at the University of Texas at Austin where she majored in Elementary Education, graduating in 1971. While in school, Janice and Jim met through their church, fell in love and were married shortly following graduation.

Janice adapted quickly to a lifestyle of a military spouse, spending much of their first years of marriage apart as Jim moved through several military assignments in various states and a deployment to the Republic of South Korea. In 1976, Janice and Jim welcomed their first child, Leann. A few military assignments later, Janice and Jim found themselves in West Germany in 1981 and welcomed their second child, Jay.

Following several more moves with Jim’s military service, Janice and Jim eventually settled in Alamogordo, New Mexico in 1992, where they have been to this day. Janice blessed countless children with her skills as a teacher and substitute teacher throughout the years. She was a self-employed bookkeeper/office manager for Big A Auto Parts and served as a secretary for Wesley Methodist Church. She often sang in the church choir and played hand bells.

A testament to the strength of their marriage, despite all odds of military service and business ownership, Janice and Jim never missed a Christmas or an anniversary throughout their 51 years together.

Janice was the proud grandmother to 6 grandkids, ranging in age from 24 to 5.

Janice was deeply loved by her friends and family and loved others with unbounded genuineness. She was a devoted wife of 51 years, always serving others with her time, a generous heart, and a heartfelt smile. We experience this loss with brokenness, but we know it is only temporary because Janice loved the Lord Jesus, and we will be with her again.

Thank you to all of you who have expressed your love for her and our family. We appreciate each one of you and are so blessed by knowing she was so well cared for by each of you.
