Irmogene Dawsey Obituary

Irmogene Roberson Dawsey, 92, passed away on December 19, 2021 in Alamogordo, New Mexico. She was born on March l, 1929 in Lexington, Texas to Timothy and Willie (Smith) Roberson.

Irmogene grew up in the Doak Springs Community of Lee County, Texas and graduated from the O.J. Thomas High School in Cameron, Texas in 1945. She earned a Bachelor of Education Degree from Houston Tillotson University in Austin, Texas in 1949. Irmogene Later earned a Master of Education Degree from Eastern New Mexico University. She was a Special Education Teacher with the Alamogordo Public Schools for 20 years from August 1964 through May 1985.

Irmogene was united in holy matrimony with Junious E. Dawsey on November 26, 1948 in Lexington, Texas. Their union was blessed with three children; Junious E. Dawsey, Jr., Leroy Dawsey and Candace Dawsey. The family moved to Alamogordo, New Mexico in February 1955. The family united with the Owen Chapel A.M.E. Church and rapidly became an integral part of the congregation. Over the years, Irmogene served in several critical positions to include Steward, Finance Committee and Sunday School Teacher. She engaged in various ministries and avenues of service for more than 65 years. She continued to serve as an active Steward, Trustee and Sunday School Teacher during this last year of her life.

Irmogene cherished her leisure time. She took advantage of every opportunity to go fishing and camping with dear friends and family. Bowling was a social and sporting activity that afforded her opportunity to build new friendships and cement old relationships. She was also an excellent seamstress and she thoroughly enjoyed using her creative talents to sew very high-quality gifts for friends and family.

Irmogene was preceded in death by her husband, Junious E. Dawsey; her father, Timothy Roberson; her mother, Willie Lois (Smith) Roberson; her son, Leroy Dawsey; three brothers, Fatie Roberson, Horatius Roberson and Edmund Roberson; and a sister, Frankye Thompson.

Survivors include her son, Junious Dawsey, Jr. (Michelle) of Tucson, Arizona; her daughter, Candace Wilson (Meron) of Alamogordo, New Mexico; three sisters, Leontene English (George) of Temple, Texas, Wilma Bradford of Gardenia, California, Alva Joyce Ellis (Bill) of Doak Springs, Texas; one brother, Timothy Roberson, Jr. (Mary) of San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 9 great-great grandchildren. She also has three goddaughters: Deborah Holloway Smith, Gloria Enoch and Lanie Cooper.

The family will greet friends from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at the Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel.

The funeral service for Irmogene Dawsey will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, December 30, 2021 at the Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor James Forney and Reverend Warren Robinson officiating.

Burial will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery.
