Iona "Gertrude" Ellison

Iona “Gertrude” Ellison, a longtime resident of Alamogordo, passed away on Monday, November 17, 2025, in Las Cruces, NM. She was born November 5, 1932, in Marshall, TX.

Gert loved camping, sewing, country music, and was always up for a game of Skip-Bo or Yahtzee! Her welcoming spirit touched all who knew her and was a beloved figure to neighborhood children.

She is survived by her children, Gloria Elaine (Milton) Chestnut, Theda Myrl (Gene) Harshey both of Alamogordo, and Stanley Gene (Kris) Cox of Nogal; a sister, Helen N. D’Arensbourg; her cherished grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents; two siblings; first husband, George W. Cox; second husband, Arthur Ray Ellison; son, Chester Ray Ellison, daughter-in-law, Jan Cox.

A Graveside Service for Gertrude will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at Monte Vista Cemetery in Alamogordo, NM. Reception to follow after services.

The Ellison family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the services.
