Ignacio (Nacho) H. Vega Obituary

Ignacio (Nacho) H. Vega, 93, joined his loving wife in heaven on May 14, 2026. He was born on February 4, 1933, in Alamogordo, New Mexico, to Pedro A. and Maria H. Vega. Nacho grew up on Pennsylvania Ave (White Sands Blvd) in Chihuahuita with his parents and three sisters.

Nacho attended Dudley School through the seventh grade before leaving to help support his family. In 1955, he was drafted into the Army for one day before being transferred to the Navy, where he served as a boatswain’s mate for 21 months aboard the USS Jason and the USS Mispillion. He was stationed in San Diego, California, and traveled to Japan and other countries during his service.

In 1956, he married Maria P. Pantoja. They lived for a short time in San Diego while he served in the Navy, then returned to Alamogordo to begin their family after his discharge. Nacho worked for the Alamogordo Daily News before moving to Raytheon, where he later retired. He also worked at the Alamogordo Sawmill and spent weekends cutting and selling firewood with his three boys. Deeply rooted in his community, he served his church by helping care for the cemetery alongside lifelong friends.

Nacho had four children, three sons and one daughter. His legacy of service continued through his family: two sons served in the Army and Navy, and two grandsons and a great grandson have served and are currently serving in the Navy.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Pedro A. and Maria H. Vega; his sisters, Alvina Vega, Maria del Carmen Almaguer; his beloved wife, Maria P. Vega; his sons, Pedro J.  and John P. Vega.

He is survived by his sister, Apolonia Gutierrez; his children, Larry R. Vega (Jan) , Mary A. Vega; his grandchildren, Dominique Briones, John P. Vega Jr. (Jessica), Celia N. Cover (John), Martina R. Vega, Mary G. D’Amato (Jason), Nick Bright (Jade), Devin Bright; great grandchildren: John, Michael, and Andianna Cover; Reymond, Patrick, and Jonathan Nunez; Skylar and Jaden Vega; Katelyn Clark, Daniel Moon; Sophia Emswieler; Isabella, Aleah, Victoria, and Deigo Najera; Dayton and Daxton Bright;  great-great grandson, Carson Cover.
