Harvey A. Lewis, 89, of Alamogordo, New Mexico passed over on Monday, May 6,2024. He went peacefully in his home, having lost the battle to stage 4 skin cancer.
Harvey was born to Helen Elizabeth (Hudson) and Oscar Lewis on January 22, 1935. Harvey joined the National Guard before serving in the Air Force for 20+ years. While in the Air Force, he worked as a jet engine mechanic for the T 38's. When he was not working, it was not unusual to see the Lewis family sitting at the end of the runways watching the birds take off. While in the Service and stationed at McConnel Air force Base in Kansas, he met Jean. They were married October 19,1956. They then began their travels to Arizona, New Mexico, Germany, France, Georgia, Okinawa, and back to New Mexico. After retiring from the Air Force, Harvey became an over the road truck driver for 2 years. He then started working back out at the base in the same shop he retired from working on jet engines.
While traveling around, Jean and Harvey enjoyed square dancing and earned many badges which brought many stories later. They enjoyed camping and grew from tent camping to pop-ups, to self-contained RV's.
Harvey started his Masonic journey on September 15, 1964, in Chateauroux, France. He became a 3rd degree Mason on November 28, 1964, in Mount Lebanon Lodge No. 53. He affiliated with Sacramento Lodge #24 on July 21, 1974. Harvey served as Master of the Lodge in 1986. While he served Master, he initiated his son Robert into the Masonic family. He served as District Deputy Grand Master of the 11th District in 1988.
Harvey joined the Order of Eastern Star with his two daughters on February 14, 1978. He served as the Worthy Patron for Alamo Chapter #11 six times, serving with his wife Jean twice and his daughter Pam once. He served as Worthy Grand Patron for the state of New Mexico 95-96 with Dorthy Pittsford. The Masonic family and the work of the order were very important to Harvey, and he continued to work on the memory work and do the best he could from memory.
Harvey is survived by his sister, Pat of Jursity, OR, and her 4 daughters, Jan, Judy, Julie, and June; his brother-in-law, Lon Clark and wife Bernice; nephews, Ed Mock and Steve Clark; his children, Pamala James and husband Jesse, of Alamogordo, Denise Sturgess and husband Kevin, of Odessa, TX, Robert Lewis of Colorado Springs, CO; 5 grandchildren, Samantha James, Connie Reeves and husband McK, Robert Inwood and wife Stephanie, Michelle Cartas, Kara Lewis; 7 great grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; as well as many friends, sisters, and brothers of the Masonic family.
