Harry Pope Obituary

Retired TSgt Harry “Hap” Pope, danced his way through life and began two-steppin’ and waltzing in Heaven on June 20, 2021.  He was born in Newton, Massachusetts on April 17, 1943.  He loved riding horses competitively and playing drums.  Hap, a patriot, served his country proudly as an air traffic controller in the United States Air Force for 20 years, including during the Vietnam War. When he wasn’t directing traffic, he was calling square dances.  He also spent years driving a big rig for JB Hunt, before retiring a second time.  Hap had a very full life, having lived all over the world and traveled extensively before finally settling down in Alamogordo, NM and wintering in Puerto Penasco, Mexico having many friends in both countries.  He was a member of the DAV, VFW, Moose, Eagles, and American Legion.

Hap was preceded in death by his father, Richard Oliver Pope; mother, Pearl Keith Merriam; and his sister, Judith Ann Wylley.

Hap’s surviving family members include his loving and devoted wife of 49 years, Robin Joy Pope; his sister, Diana Pearl Kissik; daughters, Dr. Lara Marie Pope Bryant and Alyssa Ann Trombley; as well as two grandchildren, Rogan Axle Bryant and Aliah Marion Kenning.

A Memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, June 29th at the Alamogordo VFW, open to anyone who would like to come share some memories.

Another memorial will be held, which will be announced at a later date, in Puerto Penasco this fall for one last vacation with friends and family before his final interment at the Massachusetts National Cemetery.

The Pope family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home.
