Gordon Shevis Obituary

Gordon Ritchie Shevis, 85, of La Luz passed away on June 20, 2021 at Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital.  He was born on October 13, 1935 in Brattleboro, Vermont to James and Frances Shevis.

Gordon served in both the US Marine Corps and US Air Force from 1955-1979.  He served in Japan, Vietnam, Europe, and locations around the United States.  He retired from the USAF in 1979 with the rank of Captain.  After his military service, Gordon continued his formal education which led to teaching math and computer science at Alamogordo Senior High School.  In the 1990s he decided to pursue his long-term interest in medicine, returning to school to become a registered nurse.  He worked in the emergency room at Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital for a number of years, then as a traveling nurse, and finally as a life insurance evaluator.

Always ready to take on new challenges, Gordon was a life-long learner.  He enjoyed traveling and learning about different cultures.  He was a dedicated father and passed on the values of personal responsibility, hard work, and self-reliance to his children.  He often went out of his way to assist his friends in the community.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years and mother of his children, Yoshiko; his parents; his brother, James Shevis; and sisters, Margaret Butterfield, Jean Hill, Frances Olds; and grandson, Neal Alsup.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Siriya Shevis of La Luz NM; daughters, Jean R. (Christopher) Broderick of Columbus, OH and Janet I. (Rod) Alsup of Delaware, OH; son, Philip G. (Carmel) Shevis of Chesapeake, VA; and grandchildren, Isobel, Alison and Meredith Alsup and Thomas, John and Hana Shevis.
