Gilda Wilkson, 85, our matriarch and fearless leader peacefully left this world, surrounded by family to be with the Lord on April 24, 2021. Born in Detroit, Michigan, she married the love of her life, Charles Wilkson, on her 22nd birthday. The Air Force gave them the opportunity to live and travel throughout The United States and the United Kingdom, until they made Alamogordo, New Mexico their forever home in 1981.
Everyone saw Gilda and Chuck as a relationship to aspire to. For 63 years, they held hands, stole kisses, and made each other giggle.
Gilda had the gift of making people smile and feel much loved. She was fun, silly, generous, and laughed without hesitation. She found joy in painting ceramics, crafts, cooking, and Christmas. You could often find her sitting at the table painting her latest ceramic find, often a Santa Clause, or something holiday-related. She was always tickled by the ooohs and ahhhs she received. She was a fantastic cook and often ‘forgot how many people were at home. She’d make enough extras to invite the grandkids over to share, and they always enthusiastically accepted, because Granny made THE BEST food. At Christmas time, her home overflowed with presents for the kids. It was always a magical sight. She enjoyed watching the kids open presents just as much as they enjoyed getting them.
Of all the things she loved and enjoyed, her family was at the top of the list. She was so proud of her 5 children, 15 grandchildren, and 20 (and counting) great-grandchildren. They all brought her great joy. Her love for her family was unmistakable in everything she did. Her loss is felt deeply across the generations of people who love her.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Charles, five children, William, Cindy, Roger, Nancy, and Dawn. She considered the spouses of her children, Karen, Bill, Esther, and Brian as her kids as well and adopted them in love. She also leaves behind three sisters, Marlene, Janet, and Linda of Michigan.
