David Moore Obituary

David Moore passed peacefully at home surrounded by his family July 20, 2021 after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born to Larry and Mary Moore in Amarillo, Texas on December 24, 1957.

Being a military brat, Dad was stationed at Holloman AFB which brought him to Alamogordo. He attended the Alamogordo Senior high school, class of 1976. His favorite pastime was racing motorcycles at the La Luz Speedway, racing number 76. If it weren’t for an accident in 1979 where he broke his back, I’m sure he might still be racing somewhere. He treasures the program all the racers signed for him while he was recovering in the hospital, that meant so much to David.

After being paralyzed, David went to Western New Mexico State University, studying computer science. Right after this, he discovered his new passion in life, everything guns. After David observed his first local shooting competition, he was hooked. He started shooting seriously in 1987 and never quit; his last shoot being in Otero County just a few months before he passed. He won many tournaments despite being wheelchair bound. His love for shooting is what made him decide to go to gun smith school. David loved working on guns, teaching his nephews and nieces all about guns and gun safety, reloading his own ammunition, basically anything guns. His love for guns was contagious and his nephews caught the bug as well. David was a long time member of the Otero Practical Pistol Association; he loved this organization and the members who were more than just friends to him. His love of the sport also caught the attention of a magazine called the Blue Press and a reporter named Keith Elkins did a wonderful article about David and his accomplishments.

Survivors include his sisters, Deborah Coulter (James) and Joan Whiteley (John); nieces, Shawna, Angela, and Victoria; nephews, Kristopher, Kevin and Donald, Jr.; and numerous Great nieces and nephews.  Angela claims to be his favorite, Shawna said to let her go on believing, she knows the truth.

David was preceded in death by his dad and mom, and brother, Donald Moore.
