Barbara (Fleischer) Miller Obituary

Barbara Maria Alwine (Fleischer) Miller, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, January 18, 2025, with her son Steven by her side and the comfort of her loyal dog, Oscar. At the age of 89, Barbara's life came full circle in the place where she had been happiest, surrounded by love and the memories of a lifetime.

Born in Frankfurt, Germany, on September 30, 1935, Barbara’s early years were shaped by history’s turbulent tides. Her father, a journalist and owner of a European news service, was placed under house arrest for opposing Hitler’s regime, an experience that profoundly impacted the family’s path. By the age of two, Barbara’s family moved to their summer home in Southern Germany, where she would grow up.

Her journey to the United States began in 1957, when she met Dennis Anthony Miller, a young U.S. Air Force serviceman stationed in Germany. They were married in her hometown of Rothenfels am Main, a small town nestled in the heart of Bavaria. Their shared adventures soon took them across the globe as Dennis’ military career led them to numerous places, including Sioux City, Iowa; Otis, Massachusetts; Grand Forks, North Dakota; Williston, North Dakota and several trips back to Germany. It was in these moves that Barbara’s love for people and her strong sense of community truly flourished.

Barbara’s greatest source of pride was always her four children. Through every challenge and triumph, her love and devotion to them never wavered. She often said her proudest accomplishment was raising them into the wonderful, independent adults they had become. With her loving guidance, Barbara helped shape their lives in the most meaningful of ways.

Barbara’s entrepreneurial spirit also shone brightly. In 1977, she and Dennis opened the Bavarian Inn in Williston, ND, where her love of cooking and people converged into a thriving, beloved restaurant.

A few years later, she took on a new venture with “Second Hand Roses,” a consignment shop she grew from a small business into a community staple with almost 300 accounts. Always eager to be active and involved, she later managed the Elks Club in Alamogordo, New Mexico, a job she took on with enthusiasm and joy, always looking forward to meeting new people and making new friends.

Barbara and Dennis moved to Alamogordo in 1988 to be closer to their son, Mikel, who was stationed at Holloman Air Force Base. They enjoyed many years in the Southwest, forging deep friendships with their community. They later moved to Colorado to be closer to their eldest son, Dennis, during a time of health concerns.  After her husband Dennis’s passing in 2008 in Colorado, Barbara chose to return to Alamogordo, a place she loved for its warmth and the kindness of its people.

Barbara was the loving mother of four children: Patricia (who passed away in December 2022), Mikel (retired from military and civilian service, living in Florida), Dennis (retired from military and civilian service, living in Utah), and Steven, who took care of Barbara in her final years. Steven’s devotion to his mother was a blessing to them both.

Barbara’s passing marks the end of a beautiful chapter. She was a woman of strength, grace, and immense love, and her presence in this world will be profoundly missed. As we reflect on Barbara’s life, we are reminded of the words of Isaiah 40:31, “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Barbara lived her life with hope, strength, and love. To her children, she was a guiding light-a mother who always cheered them on, celebrated their successes, and loved them unconditionally. Her legacy of love, kindness, and perseverance will live on in all those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Barbara is now reunited in heaven with her loved ones, and while we miss her deeply, we take comfort in knowing she is surrounded by the love she so freely gave. We are forever grateful for the gift of her love and will carry her memory in our hearts. Rest in peace, dear Mom, we love you.

Barbara is survived by her three sons, Dennis (Cyd), Mikel (Colleen), and Steve; along with 10 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
