Beautiful Barbara Jean Carner was carried into eternity on March 15, 2021 after 80 years of love and cheer. She was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on November 16,1940 to her adoring parents, John and Maureen Henderson. At the young age of 14 she met and later married her lifelong sweetheart, Vern Carner of Tularosa, NM. Together, they have enjoyed 62 years of successfully sharing the sometime negatives, but all of the positive aspects of life.
Blessed with living in so many places, their lives have been full with dear friends and loved ones from all over the country. Positively impacting the life of every person she met, Barbara is known for being an incredibly optimistic, continually grateful, precious little lady, regardless of her many health battles over the last 25 years. With numerous careers, it was her gift and love of education that most captured her heart. She is known as one of the sweetest Family and Consumer Sciences Teachers to ever live, being New Mexico’s 2008 Teacher of the Year. After 30 years of education (the last 10 of which were at Alamogordo High School), Vern and Barbara were delighted to be “adopted” by Kody and Azori Sparks, becoming Grandparents to six “adorables”.
Once retired, Grandma Barbara joyfully spent every school day reading to and homeschooling Karner, KateLynn, Kendrick, KyzaLynn, Korban, and Kleston, all while battling cancers. For many years, Barbara has been an “unexplainable” survivor, cared for diligently by Vern. Experiencing victory over 26 tumors, her body was finally unable to defeat bone cancer. Early Monday morning, Barbara transitioned peacefully into the arms of Jesus.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Barbara’s joy-filled life on May 29th in the Sacramento Mountains near Cloudcroft, NM with a Memorial Service held on the Saturday that would have been Vern and Barbara’s 60th Wedding Anniversary. For Memorial Service details, text 575-437-1579.
The Carner family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo funeral Home.
