Anita “Annie” Smith (Schiavo) passed away at home surrounded by family on February 8, 2021. She was born in Crystal Falls, Michigan on October 31, 1931 to Pietro and Elizabeth Schiavo who immigrated to the US from Italy. She was the youngest daughter of 16 children.
After graduating from high school, Annie moved to Chicago with her sister Prena where she met her husband Edward Smith. They subsequently moved to Albuquerque where they both eventually worked at Sandia National Laboratory with Ed as an engineer and Annie as a secretary. During her tenure at Sandia, she earned numerous awards and recognition and was known for her sense of humor and helpful nature with anyone who needed assistance. Annie enjoyed traveling and spending time with her grandkids as well as playing bingo or going to the casino. She subsequently retired from Sandia and after many years in Albuquerque moved to southern New Mexico.
In addition to her parents, Annie was preceded in death by her former husband, Ed; two sisters, Angeline Mindock and Carmen Korpi; and her 8 brothers, Giovani, Cesar, Albino, Carmello, Lawrence, Clarence, Pietro, and Peter.
Annie is survived by her sisters, Olga Cocco of Carney MI, Ida Nelson of Crystal Falls, MI and Prena Melecha of Mt Prospect, IL. She is also survived by her son, Bill Smith and wife Angela of Las Cruces, NM; daughters, Paula Tauber and husband Steve of Irwin, PA and Lori Smith of Seaside, OR; her 8 grandchildren, Michael, Nathaniel, Caleb, Jacob, Shane, Brandon, Matthew, and Delaina and her great grandchildren, Julissa, Julian, Naomi, Isaiah, Leah, Elijah, and Parker. Annie has many nieces, nephews and cousins too numerous to name but they know who they are.
In lieu of flowers, the family simply asks to be kept in your prayers.
